چکیده

The formation of a self-assembly between water soluble gold nanoparticles AuNP-1.Eu, functionalised with a heptadentate macrocyclic Eu(III) cyclen conjugate via an alkyl thiol spacer, and a naphthalene b-diketone antenna was investigated as a function of pH in water. In the study, the changes in the absorption spectra of the antenna and the gold surface plasmon resonance band, the fluorescence and the delayed Eu(III) emission of the self-assembly were all monitored. We demonstrate that the Eu(III) emission arising from the self-assembly formation on AuNP is significantly modulated as a function of pH, where within the physiological pH range, the emission is ‘switched on’ and that a direct connection can be made between theses changes and the quenching in the antenna as a function of pH.

Luminescent self-assembly formation on a gold surface observed by reversible 'off-on' switching of Eu(III) emission.

The formation of a self-assembly between a sensitising antenna and an Eu(III) functionalised cyclen complex 1.Eu, tethered to a gold surface via a C(12) alkyl thiol spacer, is described where changes in the Eu(III) emission signal the formation, and dissociation, of a ternary complex.

Luminescent self-assembly formation on a gold surface observed by reversible ‘off–on’ switching of Eu(III) emissionw

The design and synthesis of functional material are of great current interest in chemistry and nanoscience. In particular, systems based on the use of self-assembly formation have been developed and studied in solution as mimics of macroscopic devices such as molecular switches and sensors, integrated logic gates, and as artificial molecular machines. Immobilising such systems onto various soli...

Sensing of biologically relevant d-metal ions using a Eu(III)-cyclen based luminescent displacement assay in aqueous pH 7.4 buffered solutionw

Over the past decades the importance of metals in biology has been increasingly recognised. Approximately one third of the human proteome contains metal cations, either in the form of cofactors, with catalytic function, or as structural support elements. Moreover, a growing number of diseases have been identified that are characterised by metal imbalance in cells and tissues. Hence, the identif...

The effect on the lanthanide luminescence of structurally simple Eu(III) cyclen complexes upon deprotonation of metal bound water molecules and amide based pendant arms.

A series of substituted 1,4,7,10-tetraazacylcododecane ligands 1-4, possessing sensitizing nitrobenzene or naphthalene antennae, as one of the amide pendant arms, and their complexes with europium(III) were synthesised. The protonation constants and the metal ion stability constants of two of these ligands were determined by potentiometric titration. The pK(a) of the water molecules coordinated...

Enhanced photolabelling of luminescent Eu(III) centres with a chelating antenna in a micellar nanodomain.

Photoliberation of a caged, chelating naphthalene antenna greatly enhances the luminescence of a Eu(III)-cyclen complex due to metal-bound water displacement and sensitization by the antenna, giving a lanthanide-labelling strategy in different media, being optimal in the presence of a TMADS surfactant.
